Nadar’s first real breakthrough came in 1851, when he conceived the idea of a comprehensive visual record of the 1,000 most prominent Parisians in painting, music, theatre, opera and literature. With typical chutzpah, he called it the Panthéon Nadar. The first instalment, covering caricatures of 300 personalities, was published in 1854 (Fig 6).
